In 1942, my great-grandfather, John Molay, and his brothers, Paul and Charlie, established a wholesale grocery business on Morris Avenue in the heart of downtown Birmingham, Alabama. Immigrants from Campofranco, Sicily, the brothers set out to build a legacy rooted in family, hard work, and entrepreneurship. John eventually settled in Birmingham with his wife, Ida Mae, who had immigrated from Bologna, Italy.
 

Ida Mae quickly fell in love with the American South and began immersing herself in its culinary traditions. Her curiosity sparked countless experiments with barbecue, sauces, and local produce, while John carried a deep appreciation for the classic Italian cuisine of his homeland. What began as two distinct culinary traditions soon became something uniquely their own. Ida Mae began melding the flavors and techniques of Southern cooking with the Italian food John loved, creating a style of cooking that became a defining part of our family.
 

Over the years, her Sunday Sugo, barbecue sauce, and fudge cake became family legends—recipes passed down through generations and still remembered around our table today.
 

On my mother's side, my grandparents instilled in me a different, but equally important, appreciation: the art of hospitality. Growing up, they took my family and me to restaurants throughout the South, teaching us to recognize and appreciate the experience of true hospitality. Holidays at their home were centered around thoughtfully crafted tablescapes, carefully matched decorations, and, above all, the warmth and care they extended to everyone around them.

Their example taught me that hospitality is about far more than food. It is about creating an experience, making people feel cared for, and bringing people together around the table. Their lessons in leadership, generosity, and care carved out a place in my heart that will always be devoted to the art of hospitality.

Molay Bros. is a continuation of both of those legacies: a family name shaped by generations of food and hospitality, brought to the table anew.
